Taboos are aspects of culture, responsibilities and forbidden rules that can not be broken.
 
In Africa one finds that an entire person’s life, from embryo, childhood, adulthood right up to death is controlled by taboos.
 
The Ndebele Culture Taboo is carried within their surname. Ndebele surname is sacred and is believe that its like a god that controls their lifestyle. The Ndebele meaning of their surnames in English is an animal.  The associated animal to the surname are prohibited for consumption. They believe that something bad will happen to them if they eat the meat.
 
Restaurant Concept

Ndebele Taboo
A restaurant was built from the Ndebele Taboo of surnames stating what they not allowed to eat. The restaurant deliverables involve a menu, place mat and a take-away wrapper.
Logo Inspiration
 
The name “Amazilo” means Taboo in their native language, Ndebele. The style for the logo came from the geometric shapes that are designed on their thatched mud huts. The shape of the huts inspired the logo lettering.
Brand Inspiration
Brand Identity
 
The use of geometric shapes inspired the icons and patterns for the brand identity. The geometric shapes were designed for the individual menu pages. The bold colours create vibrant geometric patterns and shapes for the
restaurant brand.
Menu Inspiration
 
The Menus were inspired from the Ndebele Taboo of food they allowed to eat. The menu was built and created around four most popular different surnames. Each menu caters for what they are allowed to eat.
Take-Away Wrapping Inspiration
 
The inspiration style of design comes from the Ndebele bold colours and the geometric shapes. The Ndebele wood carvings inspired the design for the place mats, with the name and patterns lazer cut out of wood blocks to give the feeling of engraving in wood.
